Best Places to Take Engagement Photos in Indianapolis

Over the years I have been to so many different locations during engagement sessions. Each one is special in it’s own way, but I’ve grown to have my favorites! These are places that photograph really beautifully and provide a wonderful backdrop for classic portraits. I am so excited to share my favorite places to take engagement photos in Indianapolis with you!

Laurel Hall

Laurel Hall is a stunning wedding venue in Indianapolis but did you know that you can have your engagement photos done there too? Who wouldn’t want a stunning mansion as the backdrop for such timeless photos? Plus, Laurel Hall is perfect for winter sessions or those worried about rain because it’s beautiful inside and out! There is a small fee to use the space but it is totally worth it.

Newfields

My absolute favorite place to take engagement photos in Indianapolis? Newfields, of course! Formerly the Indianapolis Museum of Art, this is a classic Indianapolis location. With mature trees, an impressive mansion and lush gardens, what’s not to love? There is a small fee to photograph at Newfields, but it is absolutely worth it. My favorite time to visit Newfields is during the spring when their gardens are in full bloom!

Bonus: The Virginia B. Fairbanks Art and Nature Park

If you’re interested in having your session at Newfields, the Virginia B. Fairbanks Art and Nature Park is just steps away! Here, you’ll find a more casual vibe giving you the best of both worlds for your session.

The Indianapolis Canal Walk

If you’re looking for a classic city feel with killer views, the canal walk is for you! What I love most about the canal walk is how different it looks depending on the time of day! If you select this location, plan for a slightly earlier session because it does get dark faster due to the sunken nature of the canal.

Holcomb Gardens

Nestled within the Butler University campus, Holcomb Gardens is a true gem of Indianapolis. From the giant staircase beneath the clock tower to the adorable foot bridges, there are so many photo opportunities! My favorite time to visit Holcomb Gardens is in the fall, but it can be very busy that time of year. Lucky for all Alison Mae Couples, I have a secret up my sleeve for working around the crowds.

Indiana World War Memorial

If you love the downtown look but don’t want to deal with the heavy foot traffic of Monument Circle, the Indiana World War Memorial might just be what you’re looking for! The war memorial is located just steps away from the library which is also a great spot for photos.

Coxhall Gardens

Oh goodness, I just love Coxhall Gardens so much! Not only is this an incredible wedding venue, it’s also a great spot for engagement photos! The amphitheater provides a classic look which I love for engagement sessions. But don’t even get me started on those romantic willow trees! They absolutely sing during the golden hour!

Holliday Park

Holliday Park is one of my newer favorite locations. In the past, the ruins were fenced off so I stopped suggesting this location for sessions. But thanks to recent renovations, the ruins are open and my goodness – they are stunning! But the hits don’t stop there. There is a tree on the property that is pure magic and in the summer there is an incredible field full of goldenrod. I am obsessed.

Downtown Noblesville

Noblesville is a bit of a drive from Indianapolis, but it is so worth it! The cute downtown square is perfect for a romantic engagement session. The architecture of their historic court house makes for some seriously stunning photos. Plus, there are tons of locally owned restaurants nearby for a date night after your session!

Indianapolis Arts Center

The Indianapolis Arts Center is located in Broadripple and it is quirky in the best ways! From stunning works of art to access to the banks of the White River and the Monon, there are so many photo opportunities here. But wait.. there’s more! After exploring the arts center, your engagement session adventures could take you just a few blocks down to BRICS– Broadripple Ice Cream Station. I recommend the yellow cake batter ice cream!

Eagle Creek Park

On the north west side of the city, Eagle Creek Park holds it’s own in the running for best places to take engagement photos in Indianapolis! This location is perfect for the nature loving couple. While it is beautiful year round, it comes alive in the fall! The foliage around Lily Lake is unreal if you go at the right time. And best of all? It’s dog friendly!
