An Italian Honeymoon

Italy holds a special place in our hearts as the perfect backdrop for love stories, and it’s easy to see why. With its breathtaking landscapes, rich history, and mouthwatering cuisine, a honeymoon in Italy can be a magical experience. From charming villages to candlelit dinners overlooking the sea, here are ten tips to help you create unforgettable memories together, along with some of our personal favorites!

1. Choose the Right Destinations

Italy is a treasure trove of romantic spots. Whether you find yourselves wandering the streets of Florence, soaking in the beauty of Venice’s canals, or marveling at the cliffs of the Amalfi Coast, each destination offers its own unique charm. We adore Trastevere in Rome for its lively atmosphere and storybook feel, perfect for true romantics. Florence is the ideal spot for art lovers with so many museums to explore. It is the birthplace of the Renaissance, after all! And the Amalfi Coast is great for leisurely and romantic dinners by the beach. Make sure to include places that resonate with both of you!

2. Travel Off-Peak

If you can, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons of late spring or early fall. You’ll enjoy a more intimate experience, with pleasant weather and fewer crowds. Imagine strolling hand-in-hand through picturesque streets, soaking in the sights without the hustle and bustle! We have spent two falls in Italy now and have had wonderful experiences! Just be sure to pay attention to the coastal regions as many towns by the sea shut down in the colder months.

3. Indulge in Culinary Delights

Italian cuisine is a love language all its own. Be sure to savor the carbonara in Rome, the city where it originated and Florentine steak in Florence. Every meal can be an adventure, so take the time to try regional specialties, whether it’s fresh seafood along the coast or delectable pasta in the countryside. Sharing these meals together will create cherished moments!

4. Embrace Local Experiences

We absolutely loved taking wine tasting classes during both of our trips to the stunning Tuscany and Amalfi regions. Not only did we learn so much about the local wines, but we also enjoyed the experience of tasting alongside beautiful landscapes. We even brought home a bottle to enjoy on our anniversary—a perfect way to relive those memories! A pasta making class and a truffle hunt are on our list to do on our next visit!

5. Explore by Foot

Many of Italy’s gems are best discovered on foot. Stroll through cobblestone streets, hand in hand, stopping at quaint cafes for a coffee or gelato. This leisurely pace not only allows for spontaneous adventures but also creates intimate moments as you soak in the vibrant atmosphere around you. These cute tennis shoes were my go to footwear for exploring Italy for multiple weeks!

6. Relax at a Luxurious Spa

After a day of exploration, treat yourselves to a blissful spa day in Milan. Enjoy massages and rejuvenating treatments at QC Termemilano that will leave you feeling refreshed and ready for your next adventure. This little slice of luxury is the perfect way to unwind together!

7. Plan a Day Trip to Capri

Don’t miss the chance to take a day trip to Capri! Hop on a ferry from Positano and be enchanted by the island’s stunning beauty. Explore the iconic Blue Grotto, wander through charming streets, and indulge in a leisurely lunch with breathtaking views. It’s a day that’s sure to be filled with magic!

8. Capture the Moments

Your honeymoon is a story worth telling, so don’t forget to document it! Bring along a good camera or hire a photographer (Hey! Click here to see if our travel schedules align!) for a romantic photo session at one of Italy’s iconic locations. These images will become treasured keepsakes of your special journey together.

9. Learn Basic Italian Phrases

While many Italians speak English, learning a few basic Italian phrases can make your experience even more delightful. Simple greetings and polite expressions can create meaningful connections with locals and enhance your overall experience. Zach easily picked up the language while I struggled a bit. It was such a huge help to be able to communicate respectively with the wonderful locals!

10. Stay Flexible

Finally, allow room for spontaneity in your itinerary. Some of the best memories come from unplanned moments—like discovering a hidden piazza (shoutout to Piazzale Michelangelo in Florence) or enjoying a sunset with a bottle of wine.. which can also be enjoyed at Piazzale Michelangelo. If you can’t tell… we really loved this spot and can’t recommend enjoying a bottle of wine at sunset here enough! Embrace the unexpected; it’s all part of the adventure!
