The Upper Peninsula of Michigan
When Zach and I got married, we decided that we didn’t want to celebrate Valentines Day. Instead we would spend that money on a mini trip somewhere! We’ve seen so many incredible places over the years. The upper peninsula of Michigan however, is hands down one of our all time favorites!
With lush green plant life as far as you can see and turquoise water, driving into the upper peninsula is like stepping onto another planet. It’s otherworldly! The air is clean and wildlife is everywhere. It’s amazing! We drove through the night to get to Munising, Michigan. We drove for what seemed like hours with out passing another car. Ancient pine trees lit by the moon draw your eye upwards towards a sea of stars in the night sky. It is it’s own kind of magic.
We pulled into the sleepy town of Munising somewhere in the middle of the night. Nothing was open with the exception of the hotel. Life is slower there, and it was just what we needed. The next morning we woke up and headed to the local bagel shop before walking to the beach for breakfast. After we finished eating we hit the trails – stopping to find as many waterfalls as we could. We also checked out the Pictured Rocks National Lake Shore. On our last morning there, we got up before sunrise and had the pebble covered beach to ourselves as we gazed out at Lake Superior.
If you are looking for a quick trip from Indiana, be sure to consider the UP! My best advice is to bring plenty of bug spray. Oh, and be sure to try the pasties. Just know that they’re pronounced “passst-ties”.. don’t make the same mistake I did, haha!
