There was a time in my photography journey when the very thought of using flash scared the pants off of me. I avoided using it at all costs, because let’s face it: it can be intimidating. I’ll be the first to admit that I am not a super technical photographer. I’ve always preferred to “shoot with my heart.” However, understanding off camera flash is so important! Especially if you plan on getting into wedding photography. Well don’t worry friend, I am here to help! I’m happy to share my favorite wedding reception lighting gear with you!
Below I have linked my favorite wedding reception lighting. This is the part of the wedding day that you will likely be using flash the most. Perhaps someday I’ll film an exact tutorial on how to use each item, but for now my best advice is to practice! And check out FStoppers on Youtube!
When I was learning about off camera flash, I asked my dad and husband to stand in a dark garage while attempted to figure out lighting. It was frustrating at times, but through trial and error I started to slowly understand it. And you will too! Bring a notebook with you as you practice and make note of what changes when you adjust your settings. After awhile, you will get faster and trouble shooting will be a breeze. Just hang in there, you’ve got this!
If you’re looking for other photography gear like my favorite camera straps and card readers, you can find that here!
