Two years ago I held my sleeping baby nephew in my arms at O’Hare International Airport in Chicago and said “see you later” to my favorite little guy. Back then he had just turned one, had a couple of teeth and was figuring out how to walk. Last week, a confident three year old marched into my house and promptly melted my heart all over again.
For the past two years Asher has lived in Barcelona with my sister, Alisha and brother in law, Josh. (Check out their adventures here) To some, this might seem really difficult. And believe me, at times it is. I would LOVE to be able to be with this little guy 24/7 if I could. But Facetime has been a wonderful tool for me to connect with my sister and nephew and see their life on the other side of the planet. I am so ridiculously thankful to have the ability to hop on the phone and learn about his day and see what they are up to. But as great as technology is, nothing beats having him here in person!
Last week Asher, Alisha and Josh stayed with Zach and I while they were visiting Indiana. We may have only had a week but my goodness – it was full of amazing memories! We played with bubbles, caught toads and went to the park. Asher finally got to meet our dogs – which he calls “Tia Ali Dogs” and it is abundantly clear that he is quite the animal lover. We had make your own pizza night and a taco bar. We read books and went to the children’s museum. (Shout out to my cousin Mandy for joining us!) We danced to Baby Shark 1,000 times and giggled until we collapsed. It was the BEST you guys.
One of my favorite things about this week was seeing how much Asher loves my dad. Asher started calling my dad Beep Beep instead of grandpa due to my dad always honking his nose over facetime calls. The name stuck and now Asher and his Beep Beep are absolutely best friends. It makes my heart so happy! On Wednesday my dad and his awesome girlfriend, Laurie, threw Asher a belated birthday pool party! And dad surprised Asher with a custom dinosaur costume that dad had constructed and painted just for him! Asher and my dad share a love for all things racing (Asher is obsessed with the movie Cars) so my dad arranged to have Asher ride in the pace car before a race at the local track. How fun!
I am so thankful to have had a week full of love and fun – bonding with not just my nephew but my sister and brother in law. Life is good, ya’ll!
