Rachel and Matt have been all over the world. They’ve enjoyed beers in Germany, gazed at the peaks of the Andes Mountains from Machu Picchu and twirled through Vietnamese waterways in basket boats. So it says a great deal about who they are that when it came time to plan their wedding they chose one of their favorite places on earth: home. The first time I talked to Rachel it was during a FaceTime call and from her Chicago apartment she shared with me that her parents’ home in Indiana is her and Matt’s favorite place. Their home away from home if you will. It’s peaceful, quiet, filled with her beloved family pets and simply beautiful. As Zach and I walked in and out of the rain this past Saturday, I could immediately see what she meant. Zach and I instantly felt welcomed by Rachel’s family, received approval by her cats Molly and Simba and her sweet doggo, Addy, and caught up with Rachel and two of our favorite grooms of all time, Travis and Michael, who were there helping Rachel get ready for her special day.
One of my favorite things about Rachel and Matt’s wedding was how perfectly it reflected their personalities. For starters, Rachel opted for a non traditional wedding dress and it couldn’t be more perfect for her! The details of the day were elegant, the invitations hand written, the music (a playlist made by Matt himself) was out of this world and the guests were their very favorite people.. and pets. They stood in front of their loved ones and said some of the most beautiful vows I have ever heard while their longtime friend officiated. It was perfect. It was them.
Following their ceremony, Rachel and Matt invited their guests to the basement to enjoy some of the most beautiful and delicious food ever! The always amazing Capital City Kitchen knocked it out of the park! From the magazine worthy charcuterie board to the mouthwatering dinner, served family style, I’m certain this was a meal no one in attendance will forget anytime soon! Toasts followed dinner as several friends and family toasted the couple and shared funny stories. Finally, it was time for a surprise to the guests from Rachel and Matt! Magician David Ranalli captivated wedding goers with his performance, keeping everyone intrigued, laughing and wondering “how on earth did he do that?” – this was especially cool because Matt is a HUGE fan of magic. It couldn’t have been better! After the show, everyone enjoyed tuxedo cheesecake from the Cheesecake Factory and the most incredible cherry pies, made by rachel’s amazing mom!
As I mentioned above, Rachel and Matt’s wedding day was full of personal touches that made it impossible for Zach and I to leave there that evening with out feeling like we’d known them our entire lives. But out of everything through out the day, my favorite part of their wedding day was seeing how they handled the rain. You see, they had planned to have their party outside under the stars on a warm summer evening surrounded by lush landscaping while a flames danced in the fire pit nearby. But the Indiana weather had other plans. It rained the entire day forcing Rachel and Matt to move everything indoors. But to them, it was no problem! And when it came time to take portraits of just the two of them? Some couples might have shied away from the thought of going out in the rain at all. But not Matt and Rachel, they danced in it – massive smiles across their faces and all. And just as they opted to have their wedding in their parents’ home, I feel like their having fun in the rain on their wedding says a lot about who they are too. Fun, adventurous, laid back and willing to take on anything.. hand in hand.
Congratulations, Rachel + Matt! I can’t wait to see where the world takes you next. And if you have time, feel free to send me a copy of your wedding playlist because it was awesome!
