Wedding Photography for Joyful Souls

Kirby + Steven | Children’s Museum of Indianapolis Manor Wedding | Indianapolis, Indiana

The Schnull-Rauch House, also known as The Manor stands proudly on North Meridian Street, just feet from the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. From the road it is stunning, but once inside, there is no denying it’s beauty. Hardwood floors and fireplaces in almost every room of the historic (built in 1904) three story mansion, it’s an impressive place indeed. As I walked up the staircase, light spilled in from the vibrant stained glass window. From the second floor I could hear music and giggles – the girls were getting ready nearby. The rest of the house was quiet, but in just a few hours time it would be filled with music, joyful conversations and of course, tons of laughter.

This wedding was unlike any other I had ever photographed in a lot of ways. The first major difference that was immediately undeniable was the ability for the majority of the bridal party to burst into song (and sometimes dance) at any given moment. It was about as close as one can get to a musical wedding and I loved every second of it! I guess that’s what happens when most of the bridal party and bride and groom are affiliated with the local theatre.

Kirby and Steven’s wedding was so full of color and fun – there was no shortage of things to photograph all day long. From Kirby’s brooch bouquet to Steven’s handmade boutonniere, you could tell that they had spent months working on the details. All of the ladies rocked a bright red lip that would make Taylor Swift herself envious and shoes to match. This of course, complimented Kirby’s tea length, retro inspired dress made by one of Kirby’s dear friends, Mindy Morton. (Seriously, how cool is that?!) Not to be outdone, Steven rocked a swanky white tux that made me feel like I’d been transported back in time. They looked so good!

Another big difference with Kirby and Steven’s wedding was that we were able to take photos inside of the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. You guys, I kept it together while it was happening, but inside I was majorly geeking out! I remember going there as a kid and the museum has always had a special place in my heart. So to be able to take some photos of Kirby, Steven and their bridal party was so cool! Our first stop inside the museum was the carousel. This particular carousel was salvaged from Broad Ripple Park and has Indiana routes that can be traced back to 1917! It is magnificent! Next we headed to one of the museum’s current exhibits – Circus for some fun and generally ridiculous photos. I think we nailed it!

Before long it was time for the ceremony. Guests gathered in the yard of the manor in the sunshine. Kirby and Steven’s good friend, Rick Vale, sang a song that he wrote just for the couple as the ceremony started. When it was time for Kirby to walk down the aisle, the bride and groom’s friend (and one of my July grooms!) Danny, sang Kirby’s grandparents’ song as a surprise to them – her something borrowed. Following a ring warming ceremony, a chipper song by bridesmaid, Chelsey and finally, Kirby and Steven’s story – written and told by bridesmaid (and one of my July brides – she’s marrying Danny!) Erynn – Kirby and Steven were pronounced husband and wife. Guests threw rice as the happy couple held hands and laughed. It was pretty fantastic! Kirby and Steven are so in love and their happiness is contagious. Everyone present cheered with joy!

The rest of the evening was just as great! Kirby surprised Steven with a ukulele serenade, the speeches were thoughtful, but mostly funny and guests enjoyed delicious Chinese cuisine. Everyone had a great time, and when the garter went missing – a pair of chopsticks filled in just fine! The dance floor was full the entire night and as guests left they took little Chinese take out boxes with homemade chocolate dipped fortune cookies home with them. It was the perfect wedding, so full of fun, music and love. Thank you to Kirby, Steven, your incredible families and your super fun bridal party for having Zach and I. We had a blast!

Have fun in Cabo San Lucas and Ireland!

Bonsai!
