Ten Years Later | A Decade of A&Z

Ten years ago this week under the branches of a tall oak tree Zach officially asked me to be his girlfriend. I was only nineteen then and I had no idea of the life that would unfold for us as the years went by. The weeks leading up to that moment had been filled with specially planned picnics by the river, staying up talking all night by the campfire in his backyard and all kinds of silly adventures. He went above and beyond to make me feel special and that has not changed over the years.

The day that we met my friend Hayley said “Oooooh, you’re going to marry him!” and I scrunched up my nose in protest. After all this strange waiter just walked up to my table and started talking to me. So. Weird. And yet here we are, ten years later – approaching six years of marriage. Hayley was right.

These six years of marriage and ten years together have been filled with many amazing moments. Together we have traveled so many places, made tons of new friends and welcomed some incredible pets into our hearts and lives. We’ve seen late nights of homework, retail jobs and binge watching nineties sitcoms. (Shoutout to Fraizer and Friends) Some dates were spent on the couch with ramen and Mario Party on the Wii. Others we found ourselves at one of the fanciest steak houses in the state. We’ve walked many miles together, hand in hand, exploring cities like Chicago and Las Vegas. We’ve spent an equal amount of time enjoying the quiet of nature. We’ve celebrated our wedding, twenty birthdays, ten halloweens and and welcomed an entire decade together at midnight on New Years. We’ve mourned the loss of loved ones and friends, always moving forward but pausing to reflect on the changes we were faced with. From motorcycle trips to canoe trips, adopting our first dog and buying our first grill (we felt like TOTAL adults that day), life is never far from an adventure or the everyday. We’ve sailed off the coast of Naples, Florida and hiked through the waterfall filled woods along the coast of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. We’ve spent days at home working in the garden and riding bikes around our neighborhood. We’ve seen graduations and celebrations and have learned how to start a business. We’ve supported one another fiercely and worked so very hard to get us to where we are. Life isn’t always perfect, but our roots run deep and our love is strong. We’ve got this.

Ten years ago this week under the branches of that oak tree, I may not have known what would unfold in the years to come, but I’d do it over again in a heart beat. Zach is my best friend and I am the luckiest girl alive. Here’s to another ten years.
